Reading your own writing: How to make it count
With presenters Lisa-Catherine Cohen and Annie Korze

Cashing in on an opportunity to read aloud can be an effective marketing tool for the writer, and if done right, it can generate great word of mouth.
If not done right, a great novel, nonfiction discourse, essay, short story or poem can sound like sour mud.
Many writers are reclusive. The process of writing does lend itself to solitary moments. But sometimes you just have to get out there and market your work. Writing is a form of communication, of course. It would be a shame to find the work hitting a wall and sliding down in a gooey heap. You want it to resonate.
Some people are inherently gifted in this discipline, but most people need tips, tricks, pointers, practice. Yes, anyone can be an effective reader of his or her own works. But not everyone knows when they are inadequate at this. Even if you are reading for only a handful of your peers, it is to your advantage in so many ways to present an interesting and compelling reading.
In keeping with this year’s theme of exploring the writing process, this seminar will tell you what to expect, how to make it happen, and we will work with as many people as we have time for, to polish their readings and learn how to implement these rules.
Our presenters:
LISA-CATHERINE COHEN: As a lyricist, Lisa-Catherine has garnered two entire platinum CDs, three number-one hit songs, several top 5s and 10s, and many film and TV song placements, worldwide. She performs her work as spoken word with live music all around Los Angeles. Currently, Lisa-Catherine is polishing her forthcoming book, “The Loaded Cufflink.” An oft-published editor, with clients across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, she writes and/or edits everything to do with words. Under the umbrella of Write Now!, she helps people, especially seniors, write their books and memoirs. Her book on Media Training is called “On Camera, On Stage, On Mic.” Lisa-Catherine is a dynamic speaker, teacher/coach, and performer.

ANNIE KORZEN was the recurring Doris Klompus on “Seinfeld.” She played John Turturro’s mother in “Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen” and Jason Alexander’s sister in Neil Simon’s “Prisoner of 2nd Avenue.” She has performed her solo shows “Yenta Unplugged” and “The Yenta Cometh” on three continents and now offers a storytelling entertainment called “Tales from the Mouth: Comedies of Errors.”
Annie is proud to be a Moth Mainstage storyteller. She has done humorous essays for NPR’s “Morning Edition,” The NY Times, LA Times, and many more. Annie is the author of “Bargain Junkie: Living the Good Life on the Cheap.” Her book was covered by Tavis Smiley, Morning Edition, Patt Morrison, CBS Moneywatch, and others.
