Event Description

IWOSC Presents a Special Event for Writers:
Meet a Major Book Editor — Online Webinar

Thursday, November 29, 2018
6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time (9:00 to 10:30 Eastern Time) — a different time than in-person meetings
IWOSC members – free
Non-members – $15

Sorry, registration is now closed for this event.

This month in lieu of our Culver City panel, we offer writers not just in LA, but everywhere, a webinar accessible to anyone with a computer to enjoy listening in the comfort of your own home.

We are happy to invite interested writers to meet (virtually) Riva Hocherman — A-list decision-making editor from a Top Five New York publishing house for this inaugural event.

No matter where you are in your book writing process, you’ll benefit as an author from learning what lies ahead.  Hocherman will give writers insight into what publishers are looking for, how to improve their book’s chance of being published, and what writers can expect after signing a contract.

This event is your chance to talk to a major New York editor, and find out what happens to a manuscript or book when it’s submitted to a major publisher.

  • What will determine your fate, and whether you get a rejection – or a book deal?
  • What do publishers insist on today BESIDES “just writing a good book?”
  • How much does an author’s educational credentials, and/or their Twitter/Facebook and social media platforms count?
  • What happens AFTER the book comes out?
  • What key marketing ingredients separate a hot new title from the remainder pile – especially as the industry transitions from a bookstore-based to an online-first (Amazon, Barnes & Noble.com, virtual and E-books) platform?

Moderated Q&A
The Q&A will be moderated by IWOSC’s own Steven Sanchez and Telly Davidson. Steven and Telly will try to get in as many questions from our online attendees as time permits. (NOTE: all questions will be moderated by Steven and Telly. Hardcore, blatant pitches will not be used, and of course, all questions must be respectful and in an appropriate and proper length.)

All this and more coming up on our big night!
DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE!

This will be our final professional development event of 2018 (besides our annual Holiday Party coming in December)!

About our Speaker — Riva Hocherman

Riva Hocherman is the co-founder (with Sara Bershtel) of Metropolitan Books, and senior editor at Henry Holt Publishing.

Working under the greater Macmillan/St. Martin’s banner, Ms. Hocherman has published countless bestsellers and big-name authors.

Her specialties are serious non-fiction: history, social sciences, culture, and politics, and she also loves graphic novels. In her capacity at Metropolitan/Henry Holt, however, she has also dealt with commercial and commercial-literary fiction.
