Sitting on half a city block right across the street from Pershing Square, it is centrally located in downtown Los Angeles.

We love its frescos, murals, embroidered tapestries, carved marble fountains and columns, lead crystal chandeliers, cast bronze stairwells and doorways and more.

Jingle bells are ringing at the Biltmore. Follow the tradition of presidents, celebrities, dignitaries – and IWOSC writers – by kicking off the holiday season and celebrating history, architectural splendor, and creativity at the beautiful Biltmore Hotel!

Once again, we’ll enjoy a lavish custom pasta bar, with chefs cooking up pasta dishes with all the trimmings. Dinner includes salad, dessert and beverages. No-host bar. After dinner, we’ll toast this year’s IWOSC dignitaries with special service awards. You can join the fun with raffles and door prizes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to rub elbows with some of Southern California’s most interesting writers while enjoying a light repast and quenching drinks in a unique historic setting — the Heritage Square Museum in Highland Park. We will also toast IWOSC’s 25th Anniversary with champagne and a special celebration cake.

Heritage Square is a unique collection of eight historic structures, all constructed during the Victorian Era, and all saved from demolition and moved to this site to create a living history museum reflecting the settlement and development of Southern California. Today, the Heritage Square Museum offers visitors a look into the everyday lives of Southern Californians at the close of the 19th Century.

We enjoyed an afternoon/evening in the fresh ocean air as we mingled in the garden of MaGriffe, across from the Korean Friendship Bell.

Why? Becuase you never know what great ideas will come from a social conversation with a fellow creative, what tips you’ll glean, what inspiration you’ll find — but that good stuff always comes from such downtime and relaxing conversations.

Socializing and conversation was the call of the day.

Let’s meet for no-host cocktails in the gorgeous Rendezvous Court or take an escorted tour of this historic hotel (optional), including the elegant ballrooms and indoor pool.

Then in Smeraldi’s Restaurant, we’ll have dinner with all the trimmings – soup or salad, entrée and sides, dessert selection, and beverages (non-alcoholic included with dinner; no-host bar available).

This summer season we returned to enjoy the hospitality of CBS Studios in Studio City where fellow writers and guests wined, dined and socialized — after seeing the lot and in between being regaled with the personal stories of the fabulous Marianne Muellerleile.

Two years ago our summer party at CBS Studio City was such a hit that we’ve decided to return!

For our 2013 summer party, we enjoyed the hospitality of the CBS Radford Studios in Studio City, near Laurel Canyon and Ventura Boulevards.

We wined with the Murphy-Goode Wine’s California Collection.

We dined on the scrumptious buffet dinner at Carla’s Café, by their very own Events d’ Elegance.

And we socialized with fellow writers and guests!

We loved being on this CBS lot.

This year’s party is being held at the landmark stone residence of John Steven McGroarty, a playwright, Los Angeles Times columnist, author, historian, elected Congressman, and Poet Laureate of the State of California from 1933 until his death in 1944.

Nestled in the Verdugo foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Tujunga, this impressive stone structure was built in 1923 and is also known as “Rancho Chupa Rosa.” Like many nearby homes constructed in the period, much of the property was constructed with rocks found in the soil or from the nearby Tujunga Wash. The home features a large veranda with a spectacular view of surrounding oaks, the sprawling city below, and the majestic San Gabriel Mountains to the north.

On Monday, December 5, we kicked off the holiday season by returning to the beautiful and historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles for IWOSC’s annual winter party. Drinking and dining at Smeraldi’s, the Biltmore’s main-floor restaurant just off the old lobby, with a lavish buffet.

Annual Summer Party — Farnsworth Park

Spend a leisurely summer afternoon mingling with fellow writers, feasting on Mediterranean food, sipping wine and sangria, and taking in a panoramic view of the San Gabriel Valley and beyond.

We’ll be at the Depression-era William O. Davies Memorial community building at Farnsworth Park. The historic stone building reveals the influence of the naturalistic trend of the California Arts and Crafts period and the handmade, careful construction of local artisans. If it’s a clear day, we’ll be able to see the downtown Los Angeles skyline and the Pacific Ocean. The building is both cooland cooled. It’s historic, beautiful, easy to locate, and the parking is free.
